  1. In biology, a description of those living
  2. organisms requiring molecular oxygen (usually
  3. dissolved in water) for the efficient release
  4. of energy from their food. Almost all living
  5. organisms are aerobic. They use oxygen to
  6. convert glucose to carbon dioxide and water,
  7. thereby releasing energy. Most aerobic
  8. organisms die in the absence of oxygen, but
  9. certain organisms and cells, such as muscle
  10. cells, can function for short periods
  11. anaerobically (without oxygen). This includes
  12. almost all living organisms (plants as well
  13. as animals) with the exception of certain
  14. bacteria. Oxygen is used to convert glucose
  15. to carbon dioxide and water, thereby
  16. releasing energy. Most aerobic organisms die
  17. in the absence of oxygen, but certain
  18. organisms and cells, such as muscle cells,
  19. can function for short periods anaerobically
  20. (without oxygen).
